According to Qualcomm, this is the first commercially announced Category 20 LTE modem supporting 2 Gbps speeds to be announced.
Qualcomm's X24 modem is set to help double your phone's data speeds.
Alongside this, Qualcomm will also be showcasing its 5G Near Radio (NR) technologies, having recently completed successful trials at its San Diego, California headquarters. The new modem is specifically created to deliver peak download speeds of a whopping 2Gbps, which is twice the speed you can presently get from a fibre broadband service. In the uplink, Snapdragon X24 supports Category 20 upload speeds, 3x20 MHz CA and up to 256-QAM.
Still, the launch of this modem serves to blur the line between 4G LTE and 5G.
It hits such download speeds by aggregating up to seven carrier bands and offering 4x4 multiple-input and multiple-output or MIMO antenna arrays that can connect up to five aggregated LTE carriers to enable up to 20 LTE streams at once, essentially tapping into a much larger range of available spectrum bands.
In Qualcomm's modem product portfolio, the X24 sits somewhere between the X50, which is theoretically capable of 5Gbps downlink, and the current-gen X16 in phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S8, Essential Phone, and Sony Xperia XZ Premium, which maxes out at 1-1.2Gbps.
The Snapdragon X24 LTE modem has started sampling to customers, with the first commercial devices expected by the end of 2018.
The new modem is built on a 7-nanometer FinFET manufacturing process, an impressive feat on its own that could lead to additional energy efficiency gains.
Qualcomm has announced new Snapdragon X24 LTE modem as a precursor to migration to its 5G modem sometime in 2019.
The new modems carrying Qualcomm's Snapdragon X24 LTE from Ericsson, Telstra and NETGEAR will offer consumers incredible mobile experiences such as immersive 360-degree video, connected cloud computing, rich entertainment and instant apps.
Carriers will continue to upgrade 4G LTE networks at the same time they spin up their first 5G networks, which is the X24's main selling point as an in-betweener. "As evidenced by our work with these distinguished OEMs from around the globe and as we demonstrated in 3G and 4G LTE, Qualcomm Technologies is utilizing our deep expertise and technology leadership to support the successful launch of 5G NR, driving innovation in the mobile ecosystem".
