The company in its strategic re-alignment also seeks to smash off its competitors such as Amazon, Blue Apron Holdings, Meal-Kit purveyor etc. on various aspects including pricing, packaging and also the culinary experience.
Walmart's meal kit is supposed to serve two people, and the price range varies from $8 to $15. There are four pre-portioned kits for customers to cook, two created to be combined with the company's rotisserie chicken, and 10 "one-step" meals that just need to be heated up. Recently Amazon announced that it will start delivering groceries from Whole Foods, which might have prompted Walmart to release this new meal kit to its stores.
The Walmart Neighborhood Market at 4720 E. 21st St.is one of 250 locations across the country to offer the meal kits via online grocery pickup.
The four pre-portioned meals are steak Dijon, basil garlic chicken, pork Florentine and sweet chili chicken stir fry. "We're here to help", said Tyler Lehr, senior vice president and general merchandise manager of deli services for Walmart. Its dishes will include meatloaf, spaghetti and meatballs and chicken fried rice. "We were not going to make a move in this space until we were comfortable".
Many supermarkets have continued to sell prepared meals, however for Walmart this was more of a strategic approach that saw it engage third party suppliers until it found out the right approach for the discharge of the program. Albertsons Cos., the owner of Safeway, Carrs and other supermarkets, bought online meal-kit service Plated a year ago to sell the kits at its 2,300 stores.
In addition to the Meal Kits being launched in stores, Walmart.com offers an expanded assortment of meal delivery kits and other specialty food items like farm fresh crates and snack boxes. "If you disappoint the customer on quality, it takes a long time to get that back".
