TWO doctors and two nurses have been suspended after they gave a bus crash victim his own amputated foot to use as a pillow.
Ghanshyam was transferred to a private hospital by his family following the incident.
The incident occurred at the Maharani Laxmibai Medical College, prompting the Uttar Pradesh government to suspend four staff and order a departmental probe into it. "We have set up a four-member committee to find out who put the severed leg under the patient's head.Strict action will be taken if our staff is found at fault", Sadhna Kaushik, principal of the Maharani Laxmibai Medical College and Hospital, had said.
The victim, who has been identified as 28-year-old Ghanshyam, a bus cleaner, suffered a serious limb injury after the bus turned turtle. The driver lost control of the vehicle in an attempt to save the animals.
One relative, Janaki Prasad, said: 'When we reached the hospital, we saw his leg being used as a headrest.
"Also, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has been asked to submit a report, as to whether any instructions or guidelines on the subject have been issued to the doctors and hospitals, along with status of mechanism to monitor their implementation, across the country", the NHRC said in a statement. "There was no one to attend him".
Take a look at the pictures from the hospital below.
According to his relatives, doctors were the ones to place the foot under his head as a pillow. "The amputated leg, once detached from the body, could also be a reason for any kind of infection to the patient and others who were present in the hospital ward", it added.
She also said that the severed leg could not be stitched back as the tissue was "already dead".
Medical negligence is not uncommon either.
A video footage of the same has emerged however, it is unclear if he was aware of what he was lying on while his severed leg was propped up. This is a representational image showing medical stretchers abandoned along the corridors at a hospital in Kenya.
