The James Beard Foundation has announced its finalists for the 2018 James Beard Awards-one of the most coveted recognitions for chefs, restaurateurs, and other industry professionals. Karen Akunowicz of Myers + Chang and Cassie Piuma of Sarma in Somerville were also finalists a year ago.
The James Beard Award, according to their website, honors the late James Beard who "was a champion of American cuisine".
She is one of just five chefs nationally to receive the nomination. Hugo Ortega of Xochi, Hugo's and others won past year, Yu of Theodore Rex and now-closed Oxheart won in 2016, and Chris Shepherd of Underbelly and One Fifth won in 2014. Trixie's nomination falls under this category.
Also, Joey Baldino of Zeppoli in Collingswood; Nicholas Elmi of Laurel on East Passyunk Avenue; Cristina Martinez and Ben Miller of El Compadre in South Philadelphia; and Ena Widjojo, Maylia Widjojo, and Diana Widjojo of Hardena in South Philadelphia were among semifinalists for best chef, Mid-Atlantic.

New Orleans had seven semifinalists for this regional award. Brett Anderson is up for the investigative reporting award for his nola.com story on sexual harassment allegations at John Besh's restaurant company.
The James Beard Foundation, which oversees the awards program, also announced that it will induct Commander's Palace proprietors Lally Brennan and Ti Adelaide Martin into its Who's Who of Food & Beverage in America.
The nominees for the annual awards were announced on Wednesday. The other two nominees in that category are from the New York Times and the New Republic.
