The news comes days after more missed flags made national headlines, when the Miami Herald confirmed Cruz had confessed to his school psychiatrist that he "fantasized" about "being covered in blood". The new report adds to the string of official failings before the massacre.
Documents obtained by the Associated Press show that Peterson and two school counselors recommended in September 2016 that shooter Nikolas Cruz be involuntarily committed for mental evaluation. He told another student he had drunk gasoline and was vomiting.
Zachary Cruz told the arresting deputy that he was there to "reflect on the school shooting and to soak it in", according to the report.
There were also reportedly calls made to the Federal Bureau of Investigation which raised concerns about Cruz, in particular, that he had the potential to carry out an attack at his school.
Cruz's mother contacted Henderson Behavioral Health to initiate the psychological assessment of her son in 2016, the AP reported.
According to deputies, Zachary bypassed locked gates and doors and rode his skateboard across school grounds.
He also told the clinician he owned only a pellet gun and was not capable of doing "serious harm" to anyone. Coincidentally, the school resource officer who recommended that Cruz be "Baker Acted" was Scot Peterson - the same Broward Sheriff's Office deputy who resigned amid accusations he failed to respond to the shooting by staying outside the building where the killings occurred.
The latest revelation adds to a long list of shocking oversights by law enforcement and other authorities who were warned of Cruz' disturbing behavior.
The documents show that Cruz was very much on the radar of mental health professionals and the Broward County school system, yet very little appears to have been done other than these evaluations. Some fellow students, speaking to media on the day of the shooting, said they were not surprised that Cruz was the one who went on a rampage. "The insane stuff that he did was not right for school, and he got kicked out of school multiple times for that kind of stuff".
The FBI is taking the blame for not acting on the situation regarding Nikolas Cruz.
