Numerous families are on their way from Texas to reunite with the children, members of Channelview's band who were returning from a spring break trip to Disney World.
Multiple medical helicopters responded to the crash scene on I-10, about 20 miles east of Mobile and the injured were transported to several local hospitals in the area.
All the students were being taken to area hospitals to be checked out.
Authorities said the bus left the roadway before crossing a bridge and fell about 35 feet into a ravine.
The bus was carrying at least 52 people, WEAR-TV reports.
The interstate was closed down in both directions as the injured were rushed to the various hospitals.
The Alabama Department of Transportation announced that eastbound traffic on I-10 was being diverted at Exit 44. In the video, multiple first responders surround an overturned charter bus after it apparently crashed into a ravine. At least one is in critical condition and five have serious injuries, officials said.
The Channelview Independent School District said 40 students and six adults from the school were on board. That bus stopped after realizing what happened, but did not allow the students to get off, and eventually continued on toward Channelview, a Houston suburb of about 38,000.
The bus pulled into Channelview High School east of Houston under police escort Tuesday afternoon. "We are in contact with law enforcement in Alabama trying to obtain further information".
"Then there was a loud, really huge crash that was presumably when the bus finally came to a stop", she said.
"It's a tragic situation, and our hearts go out to all the families and students involved", Porter said in a statement.
