Protests against the Prime Minister was headed by the Deputy of the Parliament, head of the opposition faction "elk" Nikol Pashinian. This is not my thing. "I abandon the post of the head of our country", Serzh Sargsyan said as qouted by his press service.
-April 22: Pashinian meets with Sargsyan for brief televised talks, but the prime minister walks out after Pashinian says he will only discuss Sargsyan's resignation. "I am fulfilling your demand", he said in a statement quoted by the BBC. Sargsyan has riveted his statement advocating "peace, harmony and reasoning" in country, while indicating that his message is addressed to population, politicians and soldiers of Armenia.
The director of the Institute of Contemporary Economics Nikita Isayev, speaking with a correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza, noted that the protests in Yerevan are being held without any anti-Russian slogans, therefore the unrest in Armenia do not affect Moscow's interests. "Congratulations, victorious people", Pashinyan posted on Facebook. "You have won, proud citizens of the Republic of Armenia". A former war leader from Nagorno-Karabakh, he took Armenia into the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union and the two countries have a mutual-defense pact.
Pro-Moscow Sarkisian was elected prime minister by lawmakers last week soon after ending a 10-year stint as president, sparking outrage on the streets.
Images broadcast on the internet and social media showed the soldiers hugging protesters and waving the country's national flag, in a development the Armenian Defence Ministry condemned as illegal and promised to harshly punish. Every time Armenians have felt they weren't able to change power through elections, they have taken to the streets.
Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan has declared his is going to resign. The quicker they recognize this fact, the better it will be for Armenia and Artsakh. Armenians voted in a referendum to move from a presidential to parliamentary system, boosting the prime minister's role.
Protesters poured into the streets in the days beforehand to try to stop the parliament from passing the measure, and clashed with police. Pashinyan was arrested shortly afterwards.
Who is Serzh Sargsyan? They accused the 63-year-old former president of clinging to power. At least eight people died. Several of his opponents dropped out of the race and one candidate was shot in a suspected assassination attempt.
