Tension over North Korea's tests of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile surged past year and raised fears of USA military action in response to North Korea's threat to develop a nuclear weapon capable of hitting the United States.
A South Korean lawmaker told CNN in 2012 that "Ri was partially educated in China and visited South Korea in 2005 for the Asian Athletic Championships "as a member of North Korea's cheering squad". Kim was seen clapping in tune to some of the songs and took photographs with the performers after the show. It was not all, even there; the North Korean leader spoke of giving nuclear arsenals.
The two Koreas have set a date for their first summit in more than a decade on April 27, and Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump could meet in May.
The North Korean rhetoric may come as a surprise, given Kim's usual saber-rattling statements that are mostly directed against the United States.
A comment from Kim that raised eyebrows in the local media was that he originally planned to attend the second concert tonight but "adjusted" his schedule to see the first one on Sunday.
"(Kim Jong Un) showed much interest during the show and asked questions about the songs and lyrics", South Korean Culture Minister Do Jong-whan was quoted as saying after the show.
"With "Nukes 'R Us" street cred established past year, Kim seeks to routinize summit meetings with Moon, Abe, Trump, Xi, Putin, etc., and thereby be accepted as a legitimate leader of a nuclear nation", said Lee.
"All in all, Kim has astutely fractured the USA -led unified front to denuclearize the North", Nagy said. There will be another event on Tuesday that will showcase the talents of South Korean acts.
Far from the outrage Pyongyang has shown toward South Korean propaganda efforts to blare music across their tense border, the North's KCNA news agency reported Kim was "moved" while viewing the spectacle along with other North Koreans.
Is this a start of a harmonious relationship between two countries? They include Cho Yong-pil, Lee Sun-hee and girl group Red Velvet. The North Korean leader clapped and waved as South Korean bands took stage in a rare concert and was "deeply moved".
During the games, a North Korean art troupe performed in South Korea, and Moon and his wife watched it with visiting senior North Korean officials including Kim Yo-jong, who became the first member of the North's ruling Kim family to visit the South since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.
When K-Pop boy band Shinhwa performed in North Korea in 2003 as part of a similar cultural diplomacy venture, the audience - dressed in suits and traditional dresses - greeted them with silence and stony stares.
Kim said the journalists' inability to cover the concert stemmed from a breakdown in cooperation between Kim Jong Un's security detail and concert organisers.
The concerts and sports demonstration come after a period of diplomatic thaw between the two nations, which began after South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who favors closer ties with Pyongyang, entered office in May 2017.
Separately, the South Korean taekwondo team performed at the Pyongyang Taekwondo Hall as North Korean officials and residents watched.
