Azerbaijan maintains constructive and friendly relations with all member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Azerbaijan's President llham Aliyev said Thursday, Azerbaijan State News Agency reported.
They have also condemned Aliyev's surprise - and unexplained - decision to hold the election six months ahead of schedule, saying it was aimed at shortening the campaign period and hampering efforts to prevent vote-rigging.
"The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly will certainly continue to support all steps by the authorities that will bring the country forward on a path towards creating the open political environment necessary for truly free and fair elections".
Over time, Azerbaijanis have accepted the fact that Aliyev is the only alternative, and even find excuses for him, blaming the widespread corruption in the country on those around him rather than on the president himself.
"All the candidates enjoy equal rights and opportunities", he added.
Mr Aliyev has led the country since 2003, when he succeeded his father.
Ilham Aliyev was re-elected in 2008 and 2013 in polls that were denounced by opposition parties as fraudulent. He appointed his wife Mehriban first vice president, the second most powerful post after the president, in 2017.
Aliyev brought forward the date of the vote to April 11 from October 17, a move his allies said was necessary to avoid presidential and parliamentary elections clashing in 2025.
Global observers from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe were to release their assessment of the elections' conduct later on Thursday.
