Dorsey may not be finished though, as Jamar Taylor's name appeared in a recent column from Cleveland.com's Terry Pluto. Taylor is 22-20 as a starter, all in the past three seasons with the Bills, and he led Buffalo to the playoffs last season. However, since the selection of Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield, there has been the continued dialogue about there being a competition for the starting spot. "(But) let's make sure we pump our brakes a little bit, because he's got a ways to go and a lot to learn", Jackson said.
Mayfield knows why Taylor has the backing of Jackson and noted that his goal is to make similarly favorable impressions with his new teammates. "You see that and then you see him up here, how often he's actually here, it's very transparent who he is".
"We're going to hammer that until I'm good and it feels natural, and that's the way it should be", Mayfield said. I'm still going to compete and try and win that job. "I want some of that to rub off on (Mayfield) so he can see firsthand what it means to play quarterback in the National Football League". Taylor is a solid player, and if comes to keeping him, instead of picking up a sixth- or seventh-round pick, so be it. The reigning Heisman Trophy victor didn't start the draft process as the number one signal caller on the their board, but there was no doubt in the building by the end of it.
Mayfield, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Oklahoma, certainly heard his coach's sentiments and understands Jackson's thinking, but he's not treating those words like gospel. There's a reason why Russell Wilson and Drew Brees are the only quarterbacks in the league who are starting at 6-0 or less.
"It doesn't matter how you get there, everyone here has the same opportunity", he said.
Day two of the rookie minicamp is Saturday.
Taylor was acquired by Sashi Brown in one of his first acts as the Browns vice president of player personnel.
The Browns returned at pick No 4 and again made a slightly surprising move, opting for Ohio State cornerback Denzel Wardto strengthen an area of weakness rather than take NC State defensive end Bradley Chubb - who fell to the Denver Broncos with the fifth overall pick. I can only aspire to be like that.
