Weinstein was arrested and charged with rape in the first and third degrees, as well as with criminal sexual act in the first degree, for forcible sexual acts against two women in 2013 and 2004, respectively.
He carried thick books under his right arm, including what appeared to be biographies of the Broadway musical duo of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and Elia Kazan, the director of such classic Hollywood films as "On the Waterfront" and "A Streetcar Named Desire". Weinstein agreed to post $1 million cash bail, wear an electronic monitor and not travel beyond NY and CT.
Former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has been charged in NY with rape and several counts of sexual abuse stemming from two separate accusers.
In the statement released by the New York Police Department, they thank "these courageous survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice".
More than 70 women have accused Mr Weinstein of sexual misconduct although the charges relate to only two of them.
In an earlier time, both would have been likely film projects for the disgraced movie mogul, who pleaded not guilty to charges he raped one woman and forced another to perform oral sex. Investigators have reportedly been interviewing witnesses and combing Weinstein's financial records (ostensibly for evidence of payoffs); it's unclear what, if anything, they've found.
Weinstein's lawyer said in a May court filing that federal prosecutors in NY had opened a separate criminal investigation into the allegations.
Another accuser Lauren Sivan tweeted: "It's been a long time coming and today my fellow victims and I rejoice and pray no one ever underestimates the power of women when we stand together + scream the truth #WeSpoke #MeToo #TimesUp #LockHimUp".
The criminal sex act charge stems from a 2004 encounter between Weinstein and Lucia Evans, a then-aspiring actress. He consented to electric monitoring and is banned from traveling outside of NY or CT.
"I said, over and over, 'I don't want to do this, stop, don't, ' " she said. Among the accusations are allegations of rape.
Weinstein's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, declined to comment when first contacted about the charges late Thursday, but has previously said that Weinstein has consistently denied any allegations of "nonconsensual sex".
"In 1997, I was raped by Harvey Weinstein here at Cannes", she said. That's the most awful part of it, and that's why he's been able to do this for so long to so many women: "people give up, and then they feel like it's their fault".
Weinstein was formally charged with rape and other acts of sexual misconduct.
London's Metropolitan Police and Los Angeles prosecutors have said they are reviewing accusations of sexual assault against him.
Weinstein has been released on bail, but has been told he can not travel outside CT and NY. Women and a few men have publicly accused powerful men in business, government and entertainment of unwanted sexual behavior or sexual abuse.
