U.S. News and World Report is out with its latest rankings, and Boston Latin School once again tops the list. MA is home to the largest percentage of schools that earned gold and silver medals from U.S. News, which are awarded based on students' graduation rate, college readiness, and test scores.
Located near Palmdale Road on the west end of Victorville, Cobalt earned the magazine's gold medal award and was ranked 83rd in the state and 486th in the nation by U.S. News.
"We are very proud to be nationally recognized as a high-achieving school by U.S. News", Principal Mark Wells said. "I congratulate the students, teachers and staff of these schools for blazing a path of excellence". Magnet high schools are public schools that attract top-rated students in a region. The charter school - that boasts a 95-percent graduation rate - earned a silver status and a ranking of 367th in California and 1,874th nationally.
Of the 130 Oklahoma schools included in the rankings, three were awarded gold medals, 15 received silver medals and 112 were awarded bronze. The school offers a variety of honors and Advanced Placement courses, including computer science, physics and foreign language.
Cassen noted that the district's rankings aren't a goal in themselves, but the result of efforts to prepare students to graduate from high school and move onto jobs or college. "The student body makeup is 50 percent male and 50 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 12 percent", the report said. The second step in then looked at how historically underserved students (black, hispanic, and low income) performed based upon the state averages for those students.
"This is a great reflection of the support we enjoy from our community, teachers, and parents", he said. The school also ranks 52nd in the nation.
The 2018 rankings are based on data from the 2015-16 school year.
