Says the newly released documents underlying the FBI's surveillance of former campaign adviser Carter Page show the Steele dossier "was responsible for starting" Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into links between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.
"I've never been an agent of a foreign power by any stretch of the imagination", Page said on CNN's State of the Union. Investigative journalist Paul Sperry tweeted, "Newly released FISA application shows Strzok did in fact use Carter Page's September 2016 letter to Comey as a "pretext" to open investigation on him, as Strzok suggested in email to Page in Sept re 'Crossfire FISA.' Yet Strzok just swore he had nothing to do with Page FISA". While the documents do not advance the Democratic Party narrative that Carter Page did anything illegal, nor that then-presidential candidate Donald Trump "colluded" with the Russians to alter the outcome of the 2016 election, they may pose a problem for Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and partisan Democrat Peter Strzok. White House officials have argued that Page, announced by the president in early 2016 as a foreign policy adviser, played only a minor role in the Trump campaign.
Rubio was referring to the so-called Steele Dossier, compiled by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, which alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Twitter on Sunday it was looking more and more like his campaign for the 2016 presidential election had been illegally spied upon.
Tapper questioned Page over the scope of the allegations against him, noting that judges who operate under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act agreed probable cause existed for the wiretapping.
The heavily redacted documents were released after a week of head-scratching developments related to Trump's posture toward Russian Federation. "An illegal Scam!" Trump tweeted.
The released documents showed that the allegations of Nunes et.al. were untrue: The warrant applications were based on FBI investigations; Page is described as "collaborating and conspiring with the Russian government". "Hillary Clinton paid people ... they got dirt from Russians to use it against Donald Trump", he added.
"No. The court was not made aware", Nunes told Fox News in February.
Trump's laser focus on Steele ignores other facts as well, including that Page had previously lived in Russia and was on the FBI's radar as early as 2013, when it suspected Russian intelligence agents were trying to recruit Americans.
"Source #1" is widely believed to refer to Christopher Steele, a former British spy with extensive Russian Federation connections.
Mr. Trump is still dealing with the fallout of his widely panned press conference with Mr. Putin in Helsinki, where he held a closed-door meeting the Russian leader and then appeared to accept Mr. Putin's claim that he didn't meddle in the election.
This past weekend, a redacted version of the 412-page FISA warrant application used to surveil Trump adviser, Carter Page, was released to the public.
Prosecutors working for special counsel Robert Mueller this month indicted 12 Russian intelligence officers for hacking Democratic political organizations during the 2016 campaign, and releasing troves of stolen information in an attempt to influence the presidential election.
"My take is Carter Page is more like Inspector Gadget than he is Jason Bourne or James Bond", Gowdy says. Remember; he is the former British intelligence agent who was hired to research Trump-Russia ties and produced a dossier, which eventually leaked.
