Meyer is in the hot seat as Ohio State investigates whether he was aware of domestic violence allegations involving a former assistant coach.
McMurphy reported that Zach Smith was arrested for allegedly abusing Courtney in 2009 when she was pregnant, then again twice in 2015, and most recently was arrested for criminal trespassing at his ex-wife's residence on July 18.
Family, whom Smith said told her not to tell the police about her ex-husband's actions, out of fear that Zach would lose his lucrative coaching career.
Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer reacts during the fourth quarter against the Iowa Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa, U.S., November 4, 2017.
"Gene (Smith) and I agree that being on leave during this inquiry will facilitate its completion", Meyer said in a statement.
This is a he-said, she-said case and Urban did nothing wrong, they say. "I said: 'That's fine, you should tell Urban'".
He said that the various issues that took place in the months leading up to the season, including Rice, Greg Hardy, Jameis Winston, and others, were discussed with the team.
Since returning to coaching, Meyer's program has been one of the most dominant in college football, and his players have mostly stayed out of major trouble.
Ohio State has not commented on the Meyer situation since announcing he was placed on leave.
"When I first heard that last night, I did some research and there was nothing", Meyer said at Big Ten media days. The deal runs through 2022 and increases Meyer's salary to $7.6 million in 2018, with annual 6 percent raises for the bulk of his compensation. Urban Meyer is a great coach. In 2009, Smith was arrested on a charge that Courtney Smith later dropped. Smith has never been criminally charged.
Zach Smith was sacked on July 23 after he was served a civil protection order on behalf of Courtney Smith. That is about all I can say right now. "I'm not sure where that comes up".
