Rescuers still haven't reached some devastated parts of the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok after a powerful quake flattened houses and toppled bridges, killing at least 91 people and shaking neighbouring Bali, authorities said today.
The powerful 7.0-magnitude quake was also felt strongly on the neighboring island of Bali, one of Indonesia's most popular attractions, where people ran onto the streets in terror.
Thousands left homeless by a powerful quake on the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok are sheltering in makeshift tents. A spokesman for Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency said many buildings had been affected in Lombok's main city of Mataram, a lot of them built with weak construction materials.
Singapore Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam, who was in the Lombok town of Mataram at the time of the quake, wrote on Facebook that his 10th-floor hotel room shook violently and walls cracked. "It was quite impossible to stand up", he said. "It was the violence of the shaking of the building - was pretty dramatic", he said in a radio interview. Power went out for a while. After a 6.1 natural disaster on July 28 that killed many on the Indonesian Tourist Island of Lombok a 7.1-magnitude quake on Sunday night made this situation so much worse.
Most of Lombok suffered power cuts, local media reported.
"We were sitting there having dinner at about 7 o'clock last night, we just felt really big sort of shaking and the lights went off and everyone just ran", said Australian tourist Kim Liebelt as he waited with other travellers for a flight out at Lombok's global airport.
"All the hotel guests were running, so I did too".
"People panicked and scattered on the streets, and buildings and houses that had been damaged by the previous quake had become more damaged and collapsed", Nugroho said.
Other witnesses said the initial quake grew in intensity over several seconds, rattling windows and doors, and there were many aftershocks.
The country's disaster management agency urged people to stay away from the sea.
The meteorology agency issued a tsunami warning, and the tsunami only occurred with height of below 13 cm in three spots in Lombok Island, Biana Rahayu, official at the agency, told Xinhua.
