Keegan Bradley prevailed Monday at rain-soaked Aronimink Golf Club to beat Justin Rose in a playoff to win the BMW Championship. The Englishman could become the world number one with a victory, even if the event were declared complete after three rounds.
Heavy rains soiled Round 4 of the 2018 BMW Championship Sunday to the point where play was suspended before it could get underway. There are no guarantees that the waterlogged course will be playable, meaning the event may be reduced to 54 holes, which Rose would win with a 17-under-par total of 193.
Unlike most tournaments on the PGA Tour, there is a smaller field to split the $9 million prize pool with as the FedEx Cup playoffs have narrowed down the players eligible to compete over the past two weeks.
He was tied with Xander Schauffele on the 18th hole of the third round Saturday when Schauffele's 8-foot par putt rimmed around the high side of the cup, giving him a bogey and Rose the lead.
"I was just so happy to see them run out".
Keegan Bradley had bottomed out, crashing from the high of winning the PGA Championship to tumbling out of the 100 in the world.
"I assume it will either be a fine or I'm adding some in the fall, " Spieth said.
Woods, who is projected to rise to No. 21 in the world, would have needed a final-round 62 to be part of the playoff. "I'd hate to round off the season with three seconds, but that could be good enough next week, you just never know".
Woods took away any suspense about getting back to the Tour Championship for the first time since 2013.
"To say that I made it back to the Tour Championship after what I've been through is a pretty good accomplishment", Woods said. "It was hard to get ready to play because I was like, 'Man, if they call it, I'm good.' But I was only three back".
Spieth, 25, came into the week in the top 30 in points but couldn't recover from a second-round 71 in which he was one of just six players to shoot over par.
"It's a game changer for a player like me that's not in the top 50 to get in the Tour Championship", he said.
No one needs to play Monday as much as Spieth.
That means he will have played only 24 tournaments this year, which includes the Ryder Cup.
