Despite the historical familiarity, it looks to be a blank slate for Packers coach Mike McCarthy.
Mack, the 2016 Defensive Player of the Year, was traded to the Bears after skipping the Raiders' off-season workouts and holding out in training camp for a new contract. Matt Nagy is taking over as head coach from an outdated John Fox, which has led some to believe Trubisky could have a second-year turnaround similar to Jared Goff.
The Oakland Raiders were never sold on the idea of moving superstar Khalil Mack. Based on the fact that Green Bay felt the need to sign the likes of LeShun Daniels and Bronson Hill to contracts in late August, it seems that the team doesn't feel especially comfortable with what it has available. Bears general manager Ryan Pace could flip the two second-round slots they own in 2020 and move back into the first round, changing some context involved with this trade.
But that doesn't mean Bears fans can't recognize talent on the Packers roster.
The Packers are in essence going into Week 1 a little blind on defense. He spent the last two years in Dallas, but never touched the field during a regular season game.
"Well, you don't know if you can get those picks", Gruden said. Just about every time the Bears came up on the schedule in recent seasons, Bennett would get questions about the rivalry and what it was like to play on both sides. And I'll just say what (Reggie) said - I read what he said yesterday - it's a decision that we all came to.
"I'm not really here to kick them while they're down", Peppers said after that game. "I think we did that". Monday at Halas Hall was the first time he's practiced since the end of the 2017 season.
Now though, Mack has a new football home, while Carr remains tasked with getting the Silver and Black ready for their 2018 opener against the Los Angeles Rams. He also had what appears to be a stellar draft class, headlined by cornerbacks Jaire Alexander and Josh Jackson. "They're not going to cancel games, we're going to keep playing", Zimmer continued.
Two days later, when Carr was given a chance to react to the trade in a format that doesn't limit him to 280 characters, he expressed disappointment and sadness that the Raiders gave away both a player of Mack's caliber and one of Carr's best friends, in addition to making it clear that nobody wanted Mack to leave. As well in those first six matchups, the Packers will see each of their NFC North rivals one time to start the year.
