Shortly after, . the U.S. Treasury Department slapped sanctions on the same individual.
The US government has formally accused the North Korean government of being behind the Sony pictures hack, the WannaCry ransomware that crippled the UK's National Health Service and other organizations, and a series of online bank heists including $81m stolen from Bangladesh's national bank.
The Treasury Department also announced Thursday that it is sanctioning Park, "for having engaged in significant activities undermining cybersecurity through the use of computer networks or systems against targets outside of North Korea" on behalf of the government.
The department also sanctioned the agency, stating that all property and interests of both Chosun Expo and Park within the US or in the possession of USA citizens must be frozen. "The United States is committed to holding the regime accountable for its cyber-attacks and other crimes and destabilizing activities".
The Justice Department alleged that Park was a member of a government-sponsored hacking team known to the private sector as the "Lazarus Group", and worked for North Korean government front company Chosun Expo Joint Venture (Korea Expo Joint Venture or KEJV) to support the North Korean government's "malicious" cyber actions.
He is linked to the notorious Lazarus Group, which has also been implicated in the audacious attempt to use cyber techniques to steal $1 billion from the Bangladesh Bank in 2016, and to the WannaCry computer virus that affected more than 230,000 computers in 150 countries past year.
It's unlikely he will be extradited because the USA has no formal relations with North Korea.
In the massive cyber attack on Sony, hackers erased data from thousands of computers and stole tens of thousands of documents, including some emails embarrassing to the higher-ups, along with several movies that were posted on file-sharing sites. The U.S. believes he was working for a North Korean-sponsored hacking organization.
WannaCry affected hundreds of thousands of computers in more than 150 countries previous year and the Sony Pictures hack resulted in leaked films, scripts, employee information, internal emails and company passwords.
"Kim Jong Un of North Korea proclaims 'unwavering faith in President Trump.' Thank you to Chairman Kim".
It came after it approved a series called Opposite Number, which was to involved a British nuclear scientist taken prisoner in North Korea. "We will get it done together!"
