"With support from many countries here today, we have engaged with North Korea to replace the specter of conflict with a bold and new push for peace", Trump told the United Nations, striking a markedly different tone from a year ago, when he stood at the same podium to threaten to "totally destroy" North Korea over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
He calls the deal the "worst diplomatic debacle in American history" and says it failed to curb Iran's nuclear weapons program in the speech that coincides with the annual U.N. General Assembly.
In an exchange with reporters after his speech, Trump expressed hope that the US relationship with Iran could eventually follow the same trajectory as its relationship with North Korea - where the prospect of sanctions relief has led Pyongyang to discuss ending its nuclear program.
Outside of that singular moment of global embarrassment, Trump's speech reiterated his administration's rejection of global institutions... like the United Nations itself, actually.
"It's gotten very good reviews, certainly, and I think it went very well", Trump told reporters of his address.
Both Trump and Rouhani have dismissed speculation that they could meet on the sidelines of the United Nations summit.
