Despite the questions raised, China has remained confident in the correctness of its approach to co-operation with Pakistan, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang on Wednesday saying the economic corridor was a "mutually beneficial project between the two countries which plays an important role in improving people's livelihood and promoting economic development".
Pakistan is also due to speed up the launch of special economic zones in the country to spur "industrial development".
China's stand he said is that the "cooperation between China and Pakistan has nothing to do with the territorial dispute and will not affect China's principled position on Kashmir", he said. Pakistan has reasons to be disappointed unless China announced a financial package before Khan left for home on Monday.
Unfortunately we have inherited a very hard economic situation.
He said that the main goal of his party and the government was to take people of Pakistan out of poverty as half of the population in the country was either on or under the poverty line.
Both the countries also signed letters on foreign ministers' strategic dialogue mechanism to make overall planning and coordinate cooperation in various fields.
"China appreciates Pakistan's quest for peace through dialogue, cooperation, and negotiation, on the basis of mutual respect and equality, and supports Pakistan's efforts for improvement of Pakistan-India relations and for settlement of outstanding disputes between the two countries", the statement added.
Pakistan has said the project isn't a major contributor to Pakistan's debt or a cause of the "financial difficulties it faces now faces", Lu said, adding that discussions will focus on "how to better drive forward with the building of the project".
Nevertheless, China insisted it would not let Pakistan down. However, it discussed with Khan several issues that directly or indirectly involved India.
Highlighting huge market potential and geo-strategic advantage of Pakistan, Imran Khan assured maximum facilitation to the Chinese business companies for doing business in Pakistan.
PM Khan said that what China has offered Pakistan is a great opportunity. Guard of honor was presented to the prime minister. He conveyed his desire to work with him for strengthening Pakistan-China Strategic Cooperative Partnership for shared future. He said white collar criminals are a huge problem, because it is easy to catch petty thieves but white collar criminals hire expensive lawyers and become a huge problem.
India has right from the start protested against China's CPEC push as the corridor passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Imran Khan thanked President Xi for extending warm hospitality to him and his delegation in China. "In this context, China supports Pakistan's engagement with the NSG and welcomes its adherence of NSG Guidelines", it added.
This was reaffirmed during a meeting between Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and China's State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing.
Prime Minister Imran Khan said the way leadership of President Xi had tackled corruption was appreciable.
On the occasion, the two sides expressed satisfaction over the multi faceted bilateral relations.
