Just because Google told us how easy it is to "fix" battery life on OLED smartphones, doesn't mean we're getting dark modes from either Google or Apple anytime soon. It's good for saving power and dark mode looks so much better in my opinion.
Google backed up the battery life benefits of "dark mode" on operating systems and apps in a presentation during the company's Android Dev Summit on Thursday. Now, over a decade after Google first acquired Android, they've released a a proper file management app. When the video was paused, dark mode saved 60 percent.
While it's well known that screen brightness uses up more power on LCD screens, Google has been analyzing how different colors impact the battery on OLED screen devices, like the Pixel 3 and the iPhone XS.
Generally, when you increase the screen's brightness, it affects the battery life of the device. But in Dark Mode, battery consumption on the Pixel drops 63% to 92mA. However, it's a long way from here to having the system-wide option (or even the option in all apps) to go dark.
Since the inception of Google's "Material Design" initiative, the company had been pushing for the use of colour white, thus, encouraging designers to use white as their primary colour for all apps and interfaces.
Google also notes on its blog that the PHA rate continues to steadily decline on phones that have the newer Android version installed. But there may be independent apps that may offer users dark modes, with YouTube being one such example. Many of Google's partners have been going dark on its skins for different devices. That helps save battery life, rather significantly on an OLED panel, because it is lighting up those pixels individually, so the less pixels you need to light up, the less power is being used. Now Google is slowly introducing dark themes back into their apps, one by one.
Google showed the difference Dark Mode makes in its YouTube app.
It's also adding some new features, including a redesigned user interface and celebratory notifications for those times when you save storage space. Once the update is ready, it will run the next time the app is launched.
