During his appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee in September 2017, Donald Trump Jr. was asked about the project, and his answer appears to contradict Cohen's latest assertions.
Trump's opponents faulted what they called the deepening air of criminality around the president's sometime-associates, several of whom have pleaded guilty in the Russian Federation case or associated investigations.
"These developments make clear that my colleagues and I must step in and provide accountability", said Nadler (D-NY).
President Trump put pressure on the special counsel to wrap up its work on Thursday as he prepared to sit down with the Russian president.
Cohen, President Donald Trump's former lawyer, pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about work he did on an aborted project to build a Trump Tower in Russian Federation. Now he says that they in fact continued until June of that year, by which point Trump had effectively won the Republican nomination for the presidency.
The Cohen revelation comes as Mueller's investigation is showing fresh signs of aggressive activity.
"I'm the guy who stops the leaks", Cohen said in an interview past year with Vanity Fair.
As he left the White House shortly after the court proceeding concluded, Trump called Cohen "a weak person".
The plea documents demonstrate that Cohen lied to two separate congressional intelligence committees over the length of the project to "minimize links between the Moscow project and individual 1 [Donald Trump] and..."
Mueller is investigating whether the Trump election campaign in 2016 colluded with Russian efforts to damage his opponent, Hillary Clinton, and whether Trump has sought to illegally obstruct the investigation.
He also admitted lying about his contacts with Russian officials, and about discussing whether he or Trump should travel to Russia in connection with the project.
Trump said his pledge not to conclude new deals only applied after he had been elected and inaugurated.
The president swiftly fired back after news of the new guilty plea broke, blasting Cohen as a "weak person", and claiming his former attorney was "lying" to get a reduced sentence.
"But zero, I mean I will tell you right now, zero, I have nothing to do with Russian Federation", he said.
Trump would continue to sporadically announce plans for a Russian tower well into the current decade, including at the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow.
The document does not identify Individual 2, but people familiar with the investigation said it is Sater.
"As Cohen well knew, Cohen's representations about the Moscow Project ... were false and misleading", the court filing says.
The president will hope that Cohen's tarnished reputation and complicated legal affairs will be enough to dent his credibility as a witness.
Both Trump and Moscow have denied any wrongdoing. "Sentencing is set for December 12", said Guy Petrillo, another of Cohen's lawyers.
The charges were handled by Mueller's team, not the federal prosecutors in NY who handled Cohen's previous guilty plea in August to other federal charges involving his taxi businesses, bank fraud and his campaign work for Trump.
It was a potentially lucrative deal for Trump's company, handing it $4 million in upfront fees plus possibly millions more from a cut on everything from food and banquet fees to spa charges. Guidelines call for little to no prison on the new charge.
