Rumours around the festive campaign are rife, with Radio X presenter Chris Moyles last week creating a spoof ad featuring the John song Rocket Man.
"The ad is absolutely fantastic and I've truly loved every minute of being a part of it".
Sir Elton is played by actors throughout the advert, except for the opening and closing scenes.
The song choice was also criticised, with one user saying the retail company should have opted for Sir Elton's Step Into Christmas instead.
However, Elton is said to have asked for a portion of his undisclosed fee to be donated to the Elton John Charitable Trust. "Poor effort this year, I'm afraid".
Other previous campaigns have featured the singing talents of Lily Allen, Tom Odell and Ellie Golding who covered "Your Song" in the 2010 campaign. What is the most memorable gift you've received?
Meanwhile one Twitter user spotted an opportunity for Christmas jokes thanks to the advert's song choice.
It is thought the advert cost the department store around £7 million (NZ$14m) with John receiving an early six-figure Christmas gift from that budget.
Finally, there were those who realised the effect the John Lewis advert could have before it was even released.
The festive advert, which has become a Christmas custom in houses up and down the country, is due to premiere on TV on Thursday at 9.15pm.
