In response to the apology from Brzezinski, Grenell replied via Twitter: "accepting apologies is important". Brzezinski didn't offer a direct apology to the LGBT community for using the homophobic slur, she did make a direct apology to Sen.
Brzezinski (pictured above right) began by criticizing Pompeo (above left) for his reaction to the murder of The Washington Post's Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey.
MSNBC apparently tried and failed to censor the poorly thought-out quip by briefly silencing Brzezinski's words. Dick Durban (D-IL), who was on the show when she said the offensive comment.
Most notably, Trump mocked Brzezinski for trying to hang out with him at his Mar-a-Lago resort on New Years in 2017 while "bleeding badly from a face-lift".
There was criticism from the Right; Donald Trump Jr. tweeted, "This is disgusting!"
"Try "toadie" or "lackey" or "stool pigeon" or 'ass kisser, ' or 'traitor, ' but maybe don't equate homosexuality with Mike Pompeo carrying water for the murderous regime in Saudi Arabia", he wrote.
Back in January 2017, the feud escalated when Trump called Brzezinski "crazy" and took a shot at her over a supposed face-lift.
MSNBC host Joy Reid found herself in the middle of a firestorm in 2017 and 2018 for homophobic blog posts she wrote from 2007 to 2009.
