The meeting with Mumbai-based public sector banks, in which chiefs of six lenders and Indian Banks' Association chairman Sunil Mehta (also the chairman of Punjab National Bank) were present, will be followed by meetings with of other banks.
As the new head of the RBI, Das will face the issues between the government and the Central bank that that have not been resolved fully.
The RBI, on its part, countered the government's argument. "I will try to uphold professionalism, core values, credibility and the autonomy of the Reserve Bank as an institution", Das said in his first media interaction as RBI governor. He appointed just a day after Urjit Patel made a decision to step down citing personal reasons.
The former bureaucrat has replaced Urjit Patel, who abruptly resigned on Monday after a long-drawn feud with the government over issues related to governance and the autonomy of the central bank.
