Fans had been preparing to lose all ten seasons when, over the weekend, the Netflix page for "Friends" began warning users that the show would disappear from January 1, 2019. BTIG analyst Rich Greenfield suggested as much in an analyst note in October, writing "Content like Friends is likely to disappear from Netflix in 2019 as WarnerMedia launches its own SVOD service".
With winter in full swing in Canada, there's no better time to curl up and start re-watching all ten seasons for the 50th time.
With everyone launching their own streaming platforms, Netflix will be losing more and more movies and shows, and become a less desirable streaming destination. unless they can produce more quality original programming.
"Can't sleep so was trying to enjoy some Friends. then Netflix gives me the notification that friends is LEAVING NETFLIX ON JANUARY 1st".
Thankfully, Netflix came out and assured folks that Friends will remain on Netflix throughout 2019, with CCO Ted Sarandos going so far as to say that Friends leaving Netflix was simply "a rumor". Re-runs still air in the U.S. on TBS and other channels. Its May 2004 finale drew 52.5 million viewers in America, according to The New York Times.
"Friends" will always be there for you, just not on Netflix as of January.
Adding to the complexity is that despite WarnerMedia's stance on Friends, the company's chief executive, John Stankey, has also said that WarnerMedia shows will indeed migrate back from other streaming platforms once WarnerMedia launches its apps.
