"These successful data calls are a significant step in making 5G a commercial reality in early 2019, and this milestone with Nokia will help enable 5G network deployments across various operators and regions around the world", said Durga Malladi, GM of 4G/5G at Qualcomm.
"OnePlus and Samsung have committed to launching 5G handsets in the U.S. in 2019, Motorola has its god-awful 5G Mod for the Z3 (which we'll be seeing demoed here in Maui), and you can bet that every phonemaker will be plastering the internet with "[COMPANY] LAUNCHES FIRST [MEANINGLESS METRIC] 5G SMARTPHONE" press releases for the next year. The company states that the new mobile platform features their fourth-generation, multi-core AI Engine with up to 3 times the AI performance compared to the Snapdragon 845. While cable modem alternatives using 5G in place of fixed-line broadband internet connections will reach the market first, all eyes are on mobile devices whether those be smartphones, tablets, laptops, VR and AR headsets, or something else. It's also believed that Samsung will completely ditch its iris scanning feature and replace it with a new version of its face unlock technology.
Verizon partnered with Samsung to launched its first commercial 5G service in October in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Sacramento.
Complimenting the Snapdragon 855 will be the separate Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor. Apparently, Qualcomm originally designed the chip to integrate the X24 LTE modem, but we know the X50 5G modem is ready to ship to other OEMs, so we could definitely see handhelds sporting both the Snapdragon 855 and the X50 5G modem.
Qualcomm will give us more details on the new Snapdragon 855 mobile platform during the second day of the 2018 Snapdragon Tech Summit. T-Mobile is now in the process of deploying its own mobile 5G network, and there's every reason to believe Verizon and AT&T are quietly doing so as well at this point. Beyond that, there's not much else we can tell you today. Qualcomm also mentioned gaming, promising next-level gaming experiences to the next generation of premium flagship devices.
As for photography, the Snapdragon 855 will include a Computer Vision ISP - the world's first, according to Qualcomm.
Snapdragon Elite Gaming: Qualcomm says this feature will bring new gaming experiences to high-end smartphones, but there aren't many details yet.
The Snapdragon 855 likely will launch next year in devices like Samsung's Galaxy S10 and will let all of us do more with our phones than ever before.
Later today, after lunch in fact, I have some time scheduled with Qualcomm's President, Cristano Amon.
