Meyer said he knew about the accusations against Smith - grandson of former Ohio State coach Earle Bruce - but wasn't sure they were true and kept Smith on his staff because no criminal charges were filed.
The former National Football League wide receiver, who was coached by Meyer at Ohio State, opened up about the head coach's situation on FOX Sports 1 today.
But as the season progressed, it became abundantly clear that something wasn't right with Meyer. Even though he was drafted by baseball's Atlanta Braves in 1982 and played two seasons of minor league ball, football turned out to be his true calling. Day served as Ohio State's co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2017 before being promoted to the primary coordinator and playcalling role this season.
A big part of being a college coach is recruiting, and Day has shown he is willing to go far and wide to find prospects. After stepping down at Florida due to stress-related health concerns, he took the Ohio State job before the 2012 season after Jim Tressel was forced out for lying to the NCAA amid a memorabilia-for-tattoos scandal.
Then there's Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano.
But the loss to Purdue weighed too heavily and Ohio State finished at No. 6 in the playoff rankings. He quickly restored it to national prominence by winning a national title in his third season at the helm. His net worth is estimated at $20 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
Meyer's health issues could be one of the reasons for his retirement. The cyst in his brain was previously drained in 2014 and he was visibly under duress at times during the season. He dealt with some severe head pain during a 2018 game against Indiana. When Meyer brought his spread offense from Utah to Gainesville, Florida, it proved to the rest of college football that exotic offenses can be successful when they are combined with the smash mouth style of the SEC. He fired assistant coach Zack Smith in the summer of 2018 when Smith's ex-wife filed a protective order after years of domestic abuse.
Operating under the belief that Meyer will return to coaching in the next two years, these are some of the colleges that could potentially be fits for Meyer to get back in the game.
"I think Ryan and Dwayne, that's one of the best development jobs I've ever seen", Meyer said before the Big Ten championship last week.
Meyer said a lot of things contributed to his decision to retire, including the Zach Smith situation, but he mostly focused on his headaches.
Hell, there were plenty of pundits who thought hiring Urban Meyer was a gamble.
