Touting everything from faster game play to decriminalized rosters (seriously), Vince McMahon's National Football League alternative lasted just one season on its first run back in 2001.
The cities and stadiums are Dallas (Globe Life Park), Houston (TDECU Stadium), Los Angeles (StubHub Center), St. Louis (The Dome at America's Center), Seattle (CenturyLink Field), Tampa (Raymond James Stadium), New York (MetLife Stadium) and Washington, D.C. (Audi Field).
While there is still a lot for the XFL to get together before 2020 - team names, coaches, players - some new information on the upcoming season were revealed.
The Washington region did not have a franchise in the original XFL. McMahon said there's a long-term financial commitment for the league and there is a clamoring for live sports entertainment events than ever before. Luck promised a quicker pace of play with the overall goal of keeping games under three hours. Murphy introduced Vince Mcmahon. "Less stall, more ball", he said, proving again that people will proudly invent dumb slogans as long as they rhyme.
Seven of the eight franchises announced on Wednesday will be located in cities that already have National Football League teams and in some cases will be playing out of the same stadiums.
The XFL will begin play in spring 2020. I think this past year over 900 players were released from National Football League rosters. He said there will be an app that will serve as the central hub for the league. Ticket prices will be "significantly lower" than other USA professional sports leagues, he added.
McMahon is once again betting on America's insatiable appetite for gridiron, playing a 10-game regular season followed by postseason and a championship game during the winter and spring months when the National Football League has concluded.
