The president has maintained he will declare a "national emergency" to obtain border wall funds if the talks aren't fruitful.
In another tweet, he reiterated the call to "fix" the southern border. "Nancy said, NO. I said bye-bye, nothing else works!" In past shutdowns, civil servants were paid retroactively once the impasses ended. Until now, Democrats have refused to budge on the border wall, which has blocked the formation of a new budget and put government services on hold.
During the response, Pelosi said the House has passed Senate Republican legislation to re-open the governement and fund " smart, effective border security solutions", but said Trump is "rejecting these bipartisan bills which would re-open government - over his obsession with forcing American taxpayers to waste billions of dollars on an expensive and ineffective wall - a wall he always promised Mexico would pay for!" Following Trump's speech from the Oval Office on Tuesday night, Morgan reiterated his support for the president's plans during an interview with The Washington Post.
In his dire address, Trump ticked off a string of statistics and claims to make his case that there is a crisis at the border, but a number of his statements were misleading, such as saying the new trade deal with Mexico would pay for the wall, or suggesting through gruesome examples that immigrants are more likely to commit crimes.
The meeting in the Situation Room Wednesday afternoon came ahead of Trump's planned trip to the southern Texas border on Thursday.
Pelosi, speaking alongside Schumer outside the White House, claimed Trump was "insensitive" to federal workers who have had to look for other jobs as they face the reality of missing paychecks and the influence that will have on their lives. "What we hear from Republican members and, frankly, quietly from many Democrat members is that when they see the scope of this crisis, when they see the facts presented to them, that they understand why the president is so adamant about doing something meaningful to advance border security".
"I don't think we'll have to do that, but you never know", Trump told reporters. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia said she wants border security.
"I'm not optimistic that anything will change [as a result of these speeches]".
Pence said Democrats are welcome to return to the negotiation table anytime, after the president left the meeting. "We don't think that's the American way".
Seeking to keep up pressure on Trump and the Republicans, Pelosi said the House would begin passing individual bills this week to reopen some federal agencies, starting with the Treasury Department to ensure Americans receive their tax refunds.
