Alexander Zverev will enter the Australian Open with much more confidence that previous year, despite losing to Roger Federer in the final of the Hopman Cup.
The Australian pair later combined for a consolation 4-0, 4-3 (1) win in the mixed doubles against Kerber and Zverev. After the defeat of ATP Champion Zverev and the victory of Wimbledon victor Kerber, the dream of victory in the exciting 0:4, 4:1, 3:4 (4:5) ended in Mixed.
The world number three had earlier shown why he is a firm favourite for the season's first major, firing 24 winners and nine aces in a flawless 6-4 6-2 victory over ATP Finals champion Zverev. Prior to his now two wins alongside Bencic, he won back in 2001 with tennis legend Martina Hingis.
Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic retained the Hopman Cup for Switzerland after prevailing in a mixed doubles battle with Germany's Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev. The 23-year-old pulled off a brilliant return of Federer's serve to seal the win, and was over the moon after match point.
Germany hit back fast and hard in the second to break Bencic courtesy of some great net play by Zverev, and Kerber held for 3-1.
Roger Federer gifted fellow tennis great Serena Williams one of his famous Wilson rackets after beating her in their New Year's Day showdown but he says she gave it back because she "wasn't sure if she was allowed to keep it".
It was a different story this time around with Barty having a poor service game in the seventh to hand Kerber a break before going on to win the first set in 32 minutes.
"We came so close - we were one shot away".
Smashing their way through the first set 4-0, Federer and Bencic looked like they would breeze past the Germans.
"We lost a very close match past year, and we definitely wanted to get there and compete for the title again".
Tsitsipas played a fantastic match against Federer, but eventually he lost 7-6 (5) 7-6 (4).
"It's going to be the last matches in my career and I try to enjoy every point that I play", Ferrer said.
Kerber and Zverev each claimed straight-sets victories in their country's final round-robin ties in Perth on Friday, overcoming Ashleigh Barty and Matt Ebden respectively. I'm not playing the best, but I'm also not playing the worst.
With so few chances to see tennis in this format, including mixed doubles, and certainly between national teams-indeed only the Olympics-this event will be sorely missed.
